During mummification, the priest has to dress like the god Anubis. Anubis is the god of mummification. His job was to make sure the dead person was mummified and also had safe passage through the underworld. It is said that Anubis embalmed Osiris (the god of the underworld) so that he could live forever. Therefore, Anubis was the creator of mummy making. Anubis has the head of the jackal. Jackals were often seen lurking around gravesides, so the Egyptians believed that Anubis watched over the dead. Most importantly, once Anubis had ferried the dead through the underworld, his job was to weigh the dead person’s heart against a feather on the Scales of Truth.
